Identities, a theater performance that explores issues of borders and identities
within our community. The work was inspired by personal experiences collected by
performance artist Margarita Espada and her daughter Mariana Lima. Margarita is
the founder as well as executive and artistic director of Teatro Experimental
Yerbabruja whose mission is to create and produce experimental theater to
encourage understanding among people of all cultural backgrounds, to offer
workshops as a tool for social change, and to provide opportunities for emerging
artists. Margarita's initial focus was to use theater as a means of encouraging
understanding among Long Island's culturally diverse youth, particularly among
the various Latino cultures. What does it mean to be Latina/Hispanic or Spanish?
What borders are there to identify? These and other questions run throughout
this multimedia production that includes music, acting, video, and physical
theater. Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja is the first Latino theater company on
Long Island to imploy the arts to increase cultural awareness and to promote
social change. Margarita has trained throughout the world in physical approaches
to theater. She studied with the Ecole Internationale de Theatre in Paris,
Augusto Boal’s Image Theater in Brazil, and Eugenio Barba and Odin's Theater in
Denmark and Cuba. Margarita is a member of the National Association of Latino
Artists. She was a recipient of the W. Burghardt Turner Fellowhip for high
academic achievement at Stony Brook Univerisity where she received a M.F.A. in
