Northport Arts Coalition is pleased to bring you an exciting array of activities and performances this month. Last month we were treated to an evening of classical music at the Northport Library, performed by pianist Donald Isler. The music of Beethoven, Schumann, and Chopin were enjoyed by young and old alike. Other activities included Art, Music, & Poetry in the Park on June 13th. NAC Wednesdays:
July 14, Wednesday 7:30 - 8:45 pm -Northport Public Library - 151 Laurel Road, Northport NY (631) 261-6930 - George Wallace - Suffolk County Poet Laureate, and the Long Island Poetry Collective are pleased to lead an evening celebrating the poetry of Pablo Neruda through the auspices of the Northport Arts Coalition and the Northport Library. Special guest readers will join organizers of the event which will explore the personal and political passion of Neruda (b. July 12, 1904), the great 20th century Chilean, whose centennial is being celebrated world-wide this year. The evening will include a special focus on Neruda's later work, written in Valparaiso at Isla Negra, recognizing the fortieth anniversary of the 1964 publication of Neruda's masterful "Memorial De Isla Negra."

Do-ing Music:
July 23, 2004, 7:30 PM, Do-ing Music, and The Northport Arts Coalition in conjunction with the Northport Library will celebrate its second anniversary of Do-ing Music at the Northport Library, 151 Laurel Ave. Featured will be soprano Helene Williams and pianist/composer Leonard Lehrman. Included in the program will be beloved lieder(German art songs) by Brahms, Schubert and Mendelssohn, as well as "The Girl With the Sea in Her Hair" with text by Long Island's poet laureate, George Wallace and composed by Mr. Lehrman. Songs based on the texts of Shakespeare, Edna St Vincent Millay and Emily Dickinson, among others, will also be featured.
For advance tickets, call 261-6930. Admission is free.
The following songs, with music by Leonard Lehrman, will be receiving their world premieres: "Where Is the Song of the Artist on Long Island" - text by George Wallace; "Hill in Oyster Bay" - text by Fay Slavin (Greenspan); and "Not in a Silver Casket" - text by Edna St. Vincent Millay.Tickets are available July 2 at both libraries.

Dance

Posey School is now holding registration for the 2004-2005 School Year. Adult program includes classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, yoga, danskinetics, ballroom dance and drama. Classes for preteens and teens include Professional Preparatory Program as well as beginner's and intermediate level classes in ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, character, pointe, choreography, studio art and drama. Classes for school age children include programs in ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap, singing is fun, drama and art. Sunday, August 8th As part of the upcoming exhibit at the Northport Historical Museum, The Sporting Life of Northport, there will be the First Annual Jack Kerouac Softball Game on, 11AM at the Ocean Avenue School where Jack used to play ball. This is a Writers vs. Artists game! (You lose, you're BEAT! It's a win-win situation!) George Wallace is putting together the Writers team and I'm putting together the Artists team.
