FILM

Tuesday, September 26 at 7:30pm only @ Cinema Arts Centre  “STOLEN” A fascinating new documentary about the largest art heist in modern history. In Person: director Rebecca Dreyfus In 1990, thieves disguised as police officers gained access to Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and successfully perpetrated the largest art heist in modern history. Among the thirteen priceless paintings stolen were works by Rembrandt, Degas and Manet. But none is more sorely missed than The Concert by Johannes Vermeer, one of only 35 surviving works by the beloved Dutch master. For those who loved these paintings, particularly the rare Vermeer, the theft felt almost personal. At the heart of the film is a very unlikely hero: Harold Smith, the most renowned art detective in the world.

MEMBER NEWS

An invitation from Yvette O’Brien – (An original member and NAC founder)

THE LITTLE PRINCE IS  BACK -I have always had an interest in Saint-Exuperyąs work.  In September 2000, for his 100th birthday, I was the curator of an exhibit at The Northport Historical Society and Museum in Northport. This year is the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince in France. When I found out that the Northport Library was building a courtyard, I immediately knew that this was the appropriate place for a statue of The Little Prince.

Almost two years later, On September 16th, at 3 pm, in the beautiful courtyard of the Northport library, a statue of The Little Prince will be unveiled. This statue is the first one in the United States and a unique addition to the cultural landscape of the courtyardAntoine de Saint Exupery wrote The Little Prince white staying at The Bevin House in Eatonąs Neck in 1942/43.  So far, this world-wide acclaimed book has been translated into 180 languages and dialects. His universal message is still relevant today.  Many of you have reacted with enthusiasm and two of the most common reactions are : “It is my favorite book.”or  “I did not know that it was written here.”

Messieurs Francois and Jean dąAgay, nephews of Antoine de Saint Exupery as well as Monsieur Francois Delattre, Consul General de France, will be present at this historical dedication. This is a great and joyous occasion. Please come and celebrate with us. You will be part of an international event.  Amicalement. Yvette Cariou OąBrien

Northport Arts Coalition

Report from the  NAC Board

The Northport Arts Coalition was founded in April 1998 by artists who had a unique vision for our community.  Through their efforts and hard work, we now have a professional community-based arts coalition which provides venues for local visual artists, dancers, poets, musicians, and opera lovers.  Our current Board is committed to continuing those efforts, and seeking new opportunities to provide quality programs and events in the arts and humanities and improving the structural organization of the coalition.

On April 8, 2006 the former Chairperson and Treasurer of NAC announced their resignations.  An emergency NAC Board meeting was quickly called and new officers were appointed:  Lauren Paige-Executive Director, Pat Bond- Director/Treasurer, Tara Kavanaugh-Secretary, and Charlotte Koons-Board Member/Community Outreach Specialist.  At the time of transition, NAC’s membership was rapidly approaching 300, in part due to the reopening of the Northport Theater.  Under this new leadership the NAC Board had the unique opportunity to reevaluate its organizational structure including:  bylaws, procedures, financial and legal matters.  As of August 2006 your current Executive Board is proud to inform the membership regarding its evaluations, changes and accomplishments:

The  2002 bylaws were updated and approved by the board to reflect the growth of our current arts coalition.

Formal financial procedures, were drafted by the Executive Director and Treasurer. These protocols were approved as an addendum to the bylaws at the June 2006 Board meeting.  Significant financial additions included: (1)  treasury reports to be submitted to the Board on a monthly basis,(2) the inclusion of detailed separate treasury reports for specific accounts:  Sundays  in the Park, The Village Hall Art Show, NAC Wednesdays, Doing Music and The Northport Opera Company., (3)the development of contracts to be signed and dated for all NAC performances,  and  (4)the proposed opening of a new bank account to keep clear and accurate records and treasury reports.

Protocols for groups operating under the NAC umbrella were written by the Executive Director and Treasurer and approved by the NAC Board at its August 7, 2006 Board  meeting.

Guidelines for the Village Hall Art Show and Sundays in the Park were written by the Executive Director and approved by the Board for the purpose of organization and encouragement of NAC members to get involved and lend their leadership skills to the Coalition. The board will  reassess and update program guidelines as needed.

The Board has retained CPA George Rehn (specializing in non-profit organizations) for professional services and advisement in financial matters.  He has helped the Executive Director meet legal criteria in order to write up and submit two $2500 grant proposals given to NAC by Assemblyman Raia on November 22, 2005.  These grant proposals were due

no later then August 31st of 2006.  Since there was much legal paperwork to be completed before these grant proposals could be sent in, the Executive Director contacted the N.Y.S. Parks and Recreation Department and asked for an extension date. An extension date of June 2007 was given.

Mr. Rehn and grant writer Craig Fligstein also advised the Executive Director to apply to the New York State Attorney General’s  registration number to be in fiscal compliance as a non-profit organization.  The Executive Director sent paperwork ( Char 410, 500 and 990 forms) to the Attorney General’s  Office to file for years 2000 through 2005 with the State.  Since the Coalition never took in a net income  $25,000 or more during those years, the Executive Director wrote a letter to the N.Y.S. Attorney General’s Office asking for leniency and to not penalize our Coalition for not filing with their agency.  We await their reply.

NAC Advisory Board members, Mr. Rehn and Mr. Fligstein advised the NAC Board to obtain Board insurance to maintain a professional governing body of Board members.  The NAC Board approved and now has coverage.

The NAC Board meets formally once a month.  If members have any questions, or new ideas please send them to nacnewsletter@gmail.com     We welcome and encourage your input and participation in making NAC your Arts Coalition!

If you would like to become a NAC member and contribute to Art in our community, send  a check for $25 to NAC, P. O. Box 508, Northport, NY 11768

NAC NEWS has a circulation of over 1000. and welcomes member announcements.
